About
Pianist/composer Armen Donelian has channeled influences like his Armenian heritage and classical piano training into a diverse career as a respected jazz artist and educator. His sideman credits include performances with Chet Baker, Thomas Chapin, Sonny Rollins, and Mongo Santamaria, among many others, and he has performed/recorded extensively as a solo pianist and leader of his own small groups. He has also authored pedagogical books/articles and served on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music and New School University. The All Music Guide’s Glenn Astarita called his Playscape debut, 2003’s Quartet Language featuring the late saxophonist Thomas Chapin, “a masterpiece,” and Northeast Performer declared, “The record is absolutely gorgeous.”

Reviews

Donelian's work subsumes the passion of Chick Corea, the rigor of Richie Beirach, and Bill Evans' ascetic romanticism.

Mark Armen Donelian on your list of musicians to watch…
— Nils Jacobson, AllAboutJazz

Donelian is a master at redefining previously stated themes, whereas the rhythm section gets the job done in near effortless fashion. One of the many highlights resides within the pianist’s wonderful composition simply titled, ‘Mexico.’
— Glenn Astarita, JazzReview.com

Donelian is a crisp, harmonically-oriented pianist whose fleet attack sets the standard for the rest of the quartet. He's a distinctive stylist.
— Kevin Whitehead, Jazz Times

His playing is a revelation. Harmonic intricacies open up all sorts of possibilities, yet he's always there with just the right note or voicing of a chord when needed.
— Lois Moody, Ottawa Citizen
